For the fourth consecutive year, we held an Optimist International Essay contest for the high school students in our local area. The topic this year was “Lead By Example: Reality or Fiction?” and the essay participants wrote very interesting personal opinions on the topic. Our club contest winners were 1 st – $500-Tayana Simpson, 2 nd -$300- Alannah McPherson, 3 rd -$200- Brookelyn Koersen. Tayana and Brookelyn attend PVSS in Armstrong while Alannah attends R.E. Mountain Secondary in Langley and joined our contest because no clubs in her area were holding a contest. As our 1 st place winner, Tayana’s essay was entered into the District contest where her excellent essay was surely a strong contender.
At our club meeting in May, we held an awards ceremony which Tayana and her mother and Brookelyn and her parents attended. It was wonderful for our club to meet the girls and their family members andhear them read their essays. Hearing the essays read aloud by the authors added a greater appreciation for their personal debate of the topic. Unfortunately Alannah was unable to attend due to the distance and work commitments.
With permission from each of the girls, we are sharing the essays on our website to showcase their writing talent.
