HAPPY BIRTHDAY NORTH OKANAGAN OPTIMIST
CLUB OF VERNON – 5 YEARS YOUNG!
It was 5 years ago in September, 2011 that the Optimist Clubs of Coquitlam and Essex County, Ontario sponsored the creation of a North Okanagan Optimist Club. Initial organizational meetings were held at the Vernon Curling Club with then Zone Lt. Governor, Peter Smith and Al Kersey, representing the Coquitlam Optimist Club, providing guidance and counsel.
First meeting of the North Okanagan Optimist Club of Vernon – September 27, 2011 at The Pantry Restaurant at 3908 32 nd Street with members having dinner and a social hour prior to the formal meeting. Charter members were welcomed by Past International Vice President of Optimist International, Sandy Larivee of the Essex County Club and Ed Murphy III, Governor of the Pacific Northwest District, as the 50 th Optimist Club in this District affiliated with Optimist International
24 Charter members include: Janice Mori, Pam Hargreaves, Al and Lois McNiven, Donald Jefcoat, Sharon Morrison, Phyllis and Terry Dyck, Lesley and Perrin Hayes, June Kerr, Ina Forrest, Kelsey Tetlock, Ryan Powell, Gail Parkhurst, Darrel Frolek, Percival Chang, Melissa Jacobs, Michelle Tsutsumi, Menza Bouwman, Kerwood Agar, Kathy Davidson, Donna Antonishak and Kristy Anderson
Jan Mori was elected as the Charter President, Pam Hargreaves – Secretary-Treasurer, Lesley Hayes – Vice President along with 6 Directors Club projects have included the Children’s Christmas Workshop, Christmas Shopping Night at Village Green Mall, Hot Chocolate Booth at the Vernon Winter Carnival Balloon Glow, Optimist International Essay contest, the Parade and bar at the Irish Pub Night during Vernon Winter Carnival, Optimist International Junior Golf and Curling support, sponsor of Drop It & Drive presentations to high schools in Lumby, Enderby and Coldstream, sponsor for Loonies for Literacy at Teen Junction, booths at DVA Light Up and opening of the Greater Vernon Athletics Park and Airbrush Tattoos at Youthfest and the Sunshine Festival.
Today, our signature events include the Unplug and PLaY WEEK, the Vernon Heritage Fair including the Postage Stamp Contest, Gift House (Children’sChristmas Workshop), the annual Optimist International Essay Contest and our latest addition, the Playground Boxes. The latter are stocked with play equipment and the first two were installed in Vernon neighbourhood parks during the spring of 2016 as a legacy to Unplug and PLaY WEEK.
