Vernon Students Create Heritage Stamps
Canada Post brought out a series of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) heritage theme stamps and recently, a number of Vernon students also created stamps with a Canadian heritage theme. As the launch project for the 2016 Vernon Heritage Fair, students were asked to a create stamp based on Canadian history. They were also asked to provide a written explanation as to why the stamp was significant to them.
Five schools participated in the contest ~ BX, Coldstream, Harwood, Okanagan and St. James. Each classroom selected 10 entries to be considered for judging. From the 103 entries submitted, six were chosen as the best representations overall. The six finalists were Carter Vanderleest, Ben Turuk and Max Stewart from BX Elementary and Alena Collie, Megan Henderson and Man Vo from Okanagan Landing Elementary. Alena Collie was the overall winner. She received a $50 award for her efforts and her stamp will appear as the logo on the T-shirts given to the students who participate in the upcoming Heritage Fair.
The 2016 Vernon Heritage Fair is a project of the North Okanagan Optimist Club and will be held on April 8, 2016 at the Schubert Centre. Additional information on the Heritage Fair can be found at www.vernonheritagefair.org and on our Facebook page Vernon Heritage Fair.
