NOOC 5th Anniversary

NOOC 5th Anniversary Celebration

The North Okanagan Optimist Club is celebrating our 5th year as a Optimist Charted Club for 2016 - 2017 year.

We start off our year with the unveiling of our new website, which encourages our local community to learn more about our Optimist Club and to think about your participation in "Our Mission" to "Bringing Out The Best In Kids".

Feature Community Calendar Event for November 20, 2016 It has been 5 years since the North Okanagan Optimist Club was chartered in Vernon. What started out as a couple of ‘visionary’ workshops of local residents casting themselves forward and thinking about opportunities that could exist in our community to improve the lives of children, culminated inthe formation of a 20 member strong service organization. We are affiliated with Optimist International, a worldwide volunteer organization made up of more than 2,500 local Clubs whose Members work each day to make the future brighter by bringing out the best in children, in their communities, and in themselves.

How to carry out this Mission was not entirely clear at the outset but looking back, our journey has resulted in many achievements for which we are extremely proud. These include our signature annual Unplug and PLaY WEEK. It offers upwards of 90 activities intended to expose children and their families to low cost to free recreational play. The project grew from concerns by the Early Years Council who observed screen time taking the place of ‘activity time’ resulting in low levels of physical, social, emotional and intellectual readiness for children entering school. Unplug and get active is the goal that is accomplished by connecting with local organizations to host events, publish a schedule ofactivities as a supplement in the Morning Star as well as give each school student a ‘passport’ scheduleof activities.

Existing projects include:  Coordination of the Heritage Fair, an educational initiative designed to increase awareness and interest in Canadian history amongst youth
 Organization of a contest where students are asked to design a stamp around the theme of Canadian heritage with the winning stamp being placed on the T-shirts that Heritage Fair participants receive
 Coordination of the Optimist International Essay Contest which is directed to youth under the age of 18 who reside in the US, Canada or the Caribbean
 Supporting Gift House (Children’s Christmas Workshop) by donating gifts, monetary aid for wrapping supplies in addition to volunteering to wrap gifts, providing baking and hosting a café for adults while waiting for their young charges to complete their shopping<>br>  Installation and stocking of Playground Boxes at two neighbourhood Vernon parks
 ‘What do you like to do to play’ awareness wall at the Sunshine Festival
 Sponsorship of Miss Optimist, Kayla Sargeant, in the Vernon Winter Carnival’s Queen Silver Star Excellence Program 2016/2017
We will celebrate 5 years of ‘Bringing out the Best in Kids’ on December 5 at the Schubert Centre between 5 and 8:00 pm with an informal ‘Thank you’ presentation at 5:45 pm while appetizers are served. Drop in to wish us well and acknowledge our community supporters as we embark on some new initiatives and look forward to many more years of developing opportunities to enhance the lives of families in our community.
